House of Higino Francisco

Binondo
House of Higino Francisco is located at 525 Magdalena St. in Binondo (Magsangkay). The urn of Dr. Jose Rizal placed in Don Higino's house.

Don Higino was a distant relative and one of the closest friends of Dr. Jose Rizal. He was one of those who helped exhume Rizal''s remains from the cemetery in Paco. The hero''s remains were later placed in an urn and brought to his house at 525 Magdalena Street.

This is now the structure where the house of Don Higino place.
Dr. Jose Rizal gave Lolo Higino the original copy of the Noli Me Tangere in June 1892.  Though arrested, imprisoned and tortured by the Spaniards, upon release in 1897, Higino still stubbornly continued with his patriotic deeds.

Together with some of Rizal’s family members, he exhumed Rizal’s body from Paco Cemetery.  He personally washed Rizal’s bones and put them in an urn, which was kept in this house for some time until it was given its final resting place. Doña Teodora would often come to this house, see Rizal’s bones and mourn for him.

It is located at Magsangkay Street, Binondo

The "X" mark is the sign where the house of Don Higino placed. When we went to Binondo, we asked many people if they knew the Magdalena Street, other said they didn't knew so we walked and search for 525 Magdalena St. We didn't find so when we finally decide to stop searching for it, suddenly the people near that place asked us what are we looking for then finally they thought us where's that place and only it's a "X" mark remaining and one more thing it's not Magdalena anymore, it's Magsangkay.

  1. Hi. I am the great grandson of Don Higino Francisco. He was a financier of La Solidaridad, the Katipunan, and Dr. Jose Rizal when he was exiled in Dapitan. He was arrested by the Spaniards for planning the escape of Rizal from Fort Santiago. He was tortured and scheduled for execution. But the Pact of Biak na Bato provided for his release from incarceration in the Bilibid. May I know why you were looking for the ancestral house of our grandfather? (Rene Resurreccion)

  2. Yes, it is very sad development. In the meeting of the descendants, my family was against selling our grandfather Higino's property to Chinese investors. But our family was outvoted. Filomeno Francisco of the family of Tio Ginong and Tia Nory instigated the sale of that precious asset. Nasilaw sila sa pera. They don't care about sentimental value. A modern condominium is now being built in the property and our family retained token ownership by retaining a portion of the sale in favor of a condominium unit in the new building.
